ORGANIC aero styling inside and out sat on comprehensively revised drivetrains, new suspension and a wider cabin and track compared to the previous 626. Equipment levels on this 4th-generation version were high, with the top-line hatchback and MX-6 models continuing to offer the faddish 4-wheel steering system. Two new twin-cam, multi-valve engines and transmissions were available – an 85kW 2.0L “4” or a smooth 121kW 2.5L V6, paired to either a 4-speed auto or 5-speed manual. The 626 sedan had to wait until May ’92 before it received the V6. Reflecting their upmarket march, all models featured air-con, power windows and mirrors, cruise control, power steering, and 4-wheel disc brakes. Sales were brisk, especially as the GE and its AX Telstar twin deservedly won awards.
