FOR the first time, Audi is offering a sedan version of its S3 quattro performance car.
Based on the well-proportioned three-box A3 that resembles a modernised version of the B5-series A4 of the 1990s as much as it does a shrunken version of the modern iteration, the sedan also features the delightful EA888 2.0-litre turbo engine familiar from the S3 hatch and VW Golf R.
Better still, the S3 is more practical, faster and – at $62,200 plus on-road costs – $1200 cheaper than Mercedes-Benz’s CLA 250 Sport small sedan, making it the better buy unless the latter’s more aggressive styling owns your heart.
