Geneva show: Subaru Viziv-2 looks ahead

SUBARU has previewed the design direction of its next-generation small crossover and passenger car models with the Viziv-2 concept unveiled at the Geneva motor show overnight.

As its name suggests, the Viziv-2 is an evolution of an earlier show car from the same event a year ago, but is far more production-ready in its design and drivetrain development.

Measuring in at 4.4 metres in length, the Viziv-2 is only slightly shorter than today’s Impreza-based XV, with yet another boxy shape featuring typically chunky cladding to underline a rugged and outdoorsy focus.

However the new devil is in the details, with fresh C-shaped headlight treatments, a hexagonal grille, large circular driving lights and squared-off wheelarches pointing to upcoming styling elements in forthcoming redesigned models, such as the 2016 Impreza and XV.

Reflecting current trends, the interior’s dashboard is defined by a low cowl with a pair of high-set screens ahead of the driver and on the top of the centre console.

Though still unfeasibly sci-fi in their design and execution in the show car, the twin-screen displays respectively facilitate the company’s next-gen Eyesight driver-assistance and multimedia systems mooted for future models.

Under the bonnet is an all-new 1.6-litre horizontally opposed turbo-diesel plug-in hybrid drivetrain working in unison with a trio of electric motors and a lithium-ion battery pack.

Adhering to its all-wheel-drive ethos, a diesel-electric motor combo drives the front wheels via a CVT automatic (known as Lineartronic) while the remaining two motors power a rear wheel apiece.

Subaru says the rear motors can allow a varying amount of torque to be transmitted to whichever wheel requires it more to improve stability, agility, safety and driver enjoyment.

To maximise efficiency, the electric motors provide propulsion at lower speeds, with the diesel kicking in at higher velocities. When appropriate, the Viziv-2’s idle-stop system further helps stretch out the economy.

A number of adaptive driving modes are also possible to suit the driver’s mood as part of Subaru’s established SI-Drive control system, with Intelligent, Sports and Eco-Cruise choices available.

The latter mode works in conjunction with the EyeSight device’s various stereo cameras to monitor travel and environmental conditions, adjusting engine outputs for best-possible efficiency results.

“The Viziv-2 is a next-generation crossover concept inspired by the phrase ‘Vision for Innovation’ and has been created to show how advanced technology can further improve the AWD driving experience,” Subaru says.

“It indicates at a possible future design direction for Subaru’s production vehicles.”
