FORM over function. It’s an ugly set of words that cut to the core of a few car designs.

It’s an easy phrase to bandy around, especially when it is aimed at cars such as BMW’s fastback X6 SUV coupe, and even the BMW 5 Series GT, where big, gangly looks produce plenty of theatre on the outside but come with a decent serve of compromise on the inside.

BMW has had another crack at building a car with form, this time based on the 3 Series compact luxury car. It wears the 3 Series Gran Turismo moniker, bringing sportswagon styling to something that looks a bit like a hybrid between a hatchback and a wagon.

Thankfully, it also has function – with only a little bit of compromise.
