HONDA'S first foray into people movers was an unqualified critical and commercial success. Using the lauded '93-'97 Accord as a base helped, although everything other than the front suspension, engine and transmission were unique to the Odyssey. From March '96 a seven-seater variant was available while cruise control was also incorporated. To counter concerns about the 104kW 2.2-litre four-cylinder engine's ability to effortlessly haul full loads, Honda installed a bigger 110kW 2.3-litre VTEC version from January 1998. At the same time it also gained a small facelift, new trim and a tachometer. A high level of driving enjoyment, quality, refinement and comfort underpinned the Odyssey's appeal, and it still led its class right up until the second-generation version was released in early 2000. Mumsy styling aside, the original Honda people mover was a magnificent first effort.
