AS Ford's answer to the likes of Toyota Prado, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Mitsubishi Pajero, Explorer 4WDs are a common sight on Australian roads. It is an unexpectedly big 4WD with plenty of interior space and a surprising choice of two strong 4.0-litre V6 engines - plus a five-speed automatic transmission.

But the suspension is primitive and driver comfort questionable, both deficits in a hotly contested category.
