Toyota boosts Camry equipment level

TOYOTA has boosted the standard equipment levels of its ever popular Camry mid-sizer, by adding a reversing camera and improved audio systems across the range at no extra charge.

All but top-spec petrol and hybrid variants – Altise, Atara S, Atara SX and H – gain a 6.1-inch touchscreen, displaying images from the reversing camera and featuring touch and flick controls.

The top-tier petrol and electric Camry variants, Atara SL and HL respectively, benefit from the addition of a 7.0-inch touch screen that includes satellite navigation and Toyota's proprietary Toyota Link system.

Toyota Link allows users to connect their smartphone via Bluetooth to increase functionality, but where the Toyota Link system differs from other connectivity systems is its ability to be downloaded to smartphones via a separate app.

This dedicated app allows users to send navigation destinations from their phone or computer straight to the car as well as connecting to the internet to search for fuel, weather and local points of interest.

Pricing remains unchanged with the entry-level 2.5-litre petrol Altise starting at $30,490, before on-road costs, and the range topping out with the 2.5-litre hybrid HL from $41,490.

Sales of the Toyota Camry are steady this year, with 2173 vehicles sold in September, equivalent to 47.6 per cent of all mid-sized passenger cars sold in Australia for that month.

Year to date, Toyota has moved 15,781 Camrys, and while that number is down 5.5 per cent from the 16,700 it sold in the same period last year, the mid-size sedan has increased its market share from last year's 39.3 per cent to 42.6 per cent as of September 2014.

Toyota is expected to revise the current-generation Camry with a mild facelift in 2015, similar in style to the US-spec Camry previewed during this year's New York motor show.
