Peugeot prices 3008 from under $36K

PEUGEOT Automobiles Australia (PAA) has announced a $35,990 starting price for its new 3008, positioning the compact French crossover between the 308 Touring upon which it is based, which is priced between $31,990 and $35,990, and the mid-size 4007 SUV.

The sub-$36,000 entry price applies only to the 3008 XSE 1.6 Turbo automatic, while the similarly specified XSE 1.6 HDi EGC turbo-diesel will cost $36,490 and the XSE 2.0 HDi auto is set at $39,490.

Stepping up to the XTE premium grade costs at least $39,490 (again for the entry-level 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine, mated to an automatic transmission), while the XTE 1.6 HDi EGC diesel will cost $39,990.



The flagship XTE 2.0 HDi auto tops the 3008 range at $42,990 – $1500 short of the most affordable 4007 ($44,490).

As we’ve reported, the 3008 made its first Australian public appearance at the 2010 Women’s Australian Open golf championship in Melbourne in March, when it was to have gone on sale initially in diesel-only guise here.

However, sales of the 3008 exceeded Peugeot’s forecasts by 30 per cent globally since it went on sale in Europe late last year, forcing PAA to release both diesel and petrol models simultaneously in July.

PAA says its local dealer network has already taken a number of orders for the 3008, a single display version of which is now available to inspect at every Australian Peugeot dealership.

Peugeot says the 3008, which attracted a maximum five-star NCAP safety rating in Europe, is aimed squarely at the booming compact crossover market and that cutting-edge technologies make it a more sophisticated alternative to traditional SUVs.

They include five-mode Grip Control, Dynamic Roll Control, Distance Alert, Hill Assist, Head-Up Display and an automatic electric parking brake, while the 3008 2.0 HDi manual returns combined average fuel consumption of just 5.6 litres per 100km and CO2 emissions of 146 grams per kilometre.

The five-seat/front-drive 3008 is differentiated from Peugeot’s closely related 308 small-car by a cockpit-style interior and a horizontally split tailgate.

It will also form the basis of Peugeot’s first hybrid model in 2011, as well as the French maker’s first plug-in hybrid in 2012 – both of which also add a rear-mounted electric motor to also drive the rear wheels.
