ISUZU in Japan has been the sole supplier of Jackaroos to Holden since the early 1980s. The first generation arrived as a two-door wagon in November 1981, powered by either a 65kW 2.0-litre petrol and 45kW 2.2-litre diesel four-cylinder engine. The four-door version followed from August 1985, now sporting a 55kW turbo-diesel motor as well as an 81kW 2.2 petrol unit. The latter grew to an 86kW 2.6 from '88. With its boxy glassy body and separate chassis, the Jackaroo showed promising off-road ability, but its on-road refinement left something to be desired, even in the well-equipped DL (Deluxe) guise. The first big facelift came with oblong headlights in April 1987, and stayed on until the all-new and bigger second-generation L2 model arrived in '92. That car remained in production for well over a decade, differing only in minor detail.
