VOLVO Car Australia has recalled 1217 examples of its XC70 crossover, XC60 SUV and S80 flagship sedan models over possible premature wearing on the auxiliary belt tensioner.
The recall statement published by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said that a worn tensioner “may lead to excessive noise, immobilise the vehicle and cause loss of power-steering assistance.”The recall affects models built between model year 2009 and 2010 and fitted with the 2.4-litre five-cylinder turbo-diesel engine.
Affected vehicles lie within the VIN ranges of 106231 to 132907 for the S80, 065139 to 093003 for the XC70 and 028508 to 127483 for the XC60 (final six digits on VIN number only).
The company will contact affected customers, who are advised to visit their nearest dealer to have the tensioner replaced.
Volvo issued two separate recalls on the same models last year over the same auxiliary belt issue, numbering 484 units and 286 units respectively.
It is the 15th recall on the popular XC60 compact luxury SUV since June 2009, over issues relating to components such as the engine cooling fan, fuel-line rail cover, power steering belt tensioner, driver’s airbag and curtain airbags, as well as comparatively trivial details such as the wiper fluid level sensor.
