THE Subaru Outback is perfect for people who crave only a modicum of soft off-road adventure and are smart enough not to get stuck with the high running costs and impracticality of many traditional 4WDs. Never mind that it can't offer a Popemobile view from the front pews. More importantly, the Liberty offshoot provides wonderful value when compared with its European rivals, a four-cylinder engine with a strong sense of urgency and first-rate ride and handling on bitumen and dirt.
