Current Mazda6 recalled, 9356 cars affected

MAZDA Australia has issued a recall on 9356 Japanese-made current-generation GJ Mazda6 sedan and wagon models with both petrol and diesel engines over a possible battery fault.

The recall affects models sold between November 29, 2012 and April 7 this year, though about 1200 of these are undelivered models with dealerships and not in customer hands.

In a release on the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) website, Mazda said an issue with the Powertrain Control Module could result in an engine stall. A software upgrade has been ordered for all affected vehicles.

“On certain Mazda6 (GJ) vehicles, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) may function incorrectly, ceasing to charge the battery,” it said.

“This will illuminate the 'Charging system warning light' and the message 'Charging System Malfunction' will be displayed on the instrument panel.

“If the driver continues to operate the vehicle in this condition, this will result in battery drain, loss of essential functions, and eventually result in the engine stalling.” Mazda Australia says there have no recorded instances of this occurring here.

The company also says the issue is not related to its fuel-saving i-Eloop brake energy regeneration system, which was behind a recall of 1531 Australian market GJ Mazda6s in Match 2013, shortly after its December 2012 launch.
