TOYOTA'S second-generation Camry became the locally made Corona replacement in 1987, kicking off a new era of modern twin-cam Toyotas that went on to help the company dislodge Ford and Holden as our number market leader. Fleet buyers figured large in the Camry's success, particularly when the auto-only 2.0 Executive model arrived from May ’88. But the Camry's potential wasn't really realised until 1989's SV22 model. A minor facelift, it benefitted from greater refinement, a reshuffled model range, revised engines, improved steering, suspension and headlights, and extra features. It also spawned the nearly identical Holden JK Apollo. From 1991 a revised grille and new badges arrived, along with the standard fitment of power steering and the 2.0 fuel-injected engine.
