IT’S been a little over three years since GoAuto first drove the Hyundai that was quite unlike any Hyundai that had gone before.
The Korean giant’s previous attempts at sportscars had been lacklustre, to say the least – the Tiburon and S-Coupe spring to mind – but the Veloster set out to change all that.
With its wild two-plus-one door arrangement and polarising styling, the Veloster not only achieved its aim of making a statement, it gave Hyundai Motor Corporation Australia (HMCA) a surprise category front-runner in the cheap sportscar division.
Joined in the Australian market in 2013 by the equally disruptive Toyota 86, the Veloster’s emphasis on style and appearance rather than on outright handling nirvana has seen it largely avoid the sportscar hangover curve of downwards-trending sales over time.
The 2015 Series II makeover is decidedly low-key, but sees the addition of a second, more competitively priced turbo variant, as well as a tweak to the local-tuned suspension for all cars.
