SOMETIMES things are not quite what they seem, and the same goes for the latest Golf diesel. While the established 103TDI Comfortline ranks as one of the best small cars money can buy, the less expensive 77TDI diesel is something of a disappointment, not rising above the sum of its parts as the bigger engined model does. This is not to say that we don’t like the 77TDI, but against the other Mk6 Golfs, it seems to be a bit of an underachiever. Which is a pity really, because we love the idea of a reasonably priced small car with Toyota Prius-challenging economy and top-shelf dynamics.
