The second (and final) generation Paseo sold here featured a torquier but less powerful 1.5-litre engine – power dropped to 69kW but torque rose to 136Nm. Nevertheless Toyota claimed that safety, driveability, economy and emissions output improved markedly. A driver airbag and anti-lock brakes safety pack was offered as an option, while a sunroof and CD player made up a luxury option. Sales remained low, with the Paseo passing virtually undetected from the new car radar screens late in 1999 just as the radical new Echo range descended. It was never a driver's car but at least it offers used car buyers a stylish and interesting alternative to a newer Mirage, Echo or Ford Ka - although it must be stressed that it isn't really in any of their dynamic leagues...
