VW’s Passat has always impressed with its high levels of safety, quality and passenger comfort. Now, the company has slipped the V5 engine previously only seen in the VW Bora into a north-south configuration under the Passat bonnet. For a small increase in price over the previous turbo four-cylinder, this helps lift perceptions of the entry-level Passat’s standing in the prestige market, as well as providing more power and torque. On paper the change looks enough, but does the V5 deliver?
