THE Mazda6 is believed by the company to embody all the elements of its emergence as a maker of "sporting" cars. Where previous mid-size Mazdas were uncompromisingly conservative, the new car has a distinct edge in both the way it looks and acts. New looks are underpinned by a very competent chassis providing a comfortable ride with excellent handling and a fresh, 2.3-litre all-alloy four-cylinder engine that delivers smooth, very economical performance. The only downside is that its recommended diet is premium unleaded fuel. The car is also roomier, safer in a crash and offers decent loading facilities - especially in hatchback versions. If this is Mazda's interpretation of European design, then the company's engineers and designers understand their art well.
