CITROEN needs a leg up in the Australian market but the French car-maker isn't planning to do it with its returning C4 small hatchback.

That task is being left to its best-selling Berlingo van, Grand Picasso people-mover with even greater expectations for the imminent Cactus compact SUV when it arrives early next year.

The C4's job is to look after existing customers, says Citroen, and keep business ticking along while the grand plans of significant growth are swung into action.

After a two-year hiatus, the Citroen C4 has returned to Australia with a more modern, economical and lighter drivetrain, a light restyling and a rear-view camera developed exclusively for Australia.

But with its mid-life update and comeback, can the 2015 C4 do more than just retain a handful of loyal Citroen owners until the cavalry arrives?
