Subaru Outback, Forester diesels now more efficient

BY MIKE COSTELLO | 16th Jan 2012

SUBARU has improved the fuel efficiency of its diesel-powered Forester compact SUV and Outback crossover for the 2012 model year.

The two models share the same 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine, tweaked to consume 6.0 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined cycle – down from 6.4L/100km, a 6.2 per cent improvement.

Carbon-dioxide emissions have also been cut to 158 grams per km (down from 168g/km).

Mid-range pulling power is also claimed to have been boosted courtesy of a slight widening of the torque band, which sees the maximum 350Nm become available from between 1600 and 2400rpm, compared to 1800-2400rpm previously.

Power outputs for both models are unchanged – 108kW at 3600rpm for the Forester and 110kW at 3600rpm for the Outback.

Both models continue to be offered with a six-speed manual as the sole gearbox option.

The Japanese brand chalks up the mild improvements to a range of engine and gearbox refinements, including a new camshaft profile, lighter connecting rods, low-friction bearings and an over-revving warning light.

Subaru Australia managing director Nick Senior said the changes would strengthen the appeal of both models – up to 20 per cent of which are sold in diesel guise.

“These significant refinements to engine and transmission make an even more compelling case,” he said.

“The smoother gearchange helps more efficient driving and better fuel economy, which is a major focus for Subaru diesel customers.”Subaru gave the Outback 2.0D diesel a price hike of up to $3000 last month with the addition of more standard features.

This was one of several model upgrades announced by the brand in the past month, which have also included extra features and driveaway deals on entry-level Forester X variants and more equipment and price tweaks across the Liberty and Exiga model ranges.
