Frankfurt show: Suzuki's next-gen Jimny previewed

SUZUKI has ripped the covers off its iV-4 compact SUV concept at Frankfurt, previewing the expected replacement for the aging Jimny four-wheel drive.

Launched in 1998, the 15-year old Jimny is one of the longest-running models available on the Australian market, and a replacement for the tiny off-roader well overdue.

The iV-4 - which stands for “individuality” “vehicle” and “4-wheel drive” - is a new design for the brand, but features familiar Suzuki elements such as the five-slotted grille similar to the Jimny and a clamshell bonnet from the Grand Vitara.

Sharp lines, deep scallops in the doors and a bulging belt line from the headlights to the tail add to the rugged look, while chunky rear guards, big tyres and the contrasting black roof are reminiscent of the Range Rover Evoque.

LED-style head-lights and a massive Suzuki badge feature at the front, and the upward lines of the front apron gives the impression the vehicle is smiling.

A number of design elements from the concept are unlikely to make it to production, including the fog-lights with built-in laser sensors in the roof above the windscreen, the illuminated grille and slim-line external mirrors.

While Suzuki has revealed little about possible powertrains, it said in a statement the iV-4 would be light-weight and boast some of the lowest CO2 emissions in its class. The production model will also feature Suzuki's next-generation Allgrip four-wheel-drive system Suzuki confirmed production of the iV-4 will start in 2015 at its Magyar Suzuki plant in Hungary in preparation for a European launch shortly after. This points to a possible local berth in late 2015 or early 2016.

The Japanese car-maker said it would offer a number of personalisation options for the production model, with buyers able to choose from different exterior colours, parts and materials.

Measuring at 4215mm long, 1850mm wide, 1665mm high and with a 2500mm long wheelbase, the iV-4 has dimensions that place it somewhere between a current-generation Jimny and a Grand Vitara.

The iV-4 is said to be a further development of the XA Alpha concept Suzuki revealed at the Dehli auto expo earlier this year.

Despite its age, Suzuki still sells an average of around 70 Jimnys a month in Australia and has shifted 646 units to the end of August this year.

The compact off-road hero is no longer offered in Victoria as it is not fitted with electronic stability control which is mandatory in for vehicles sold in the state.

Meanwhile, the aging Grand Vitara looks set to soldier on for the foreseeable future, with a Suzuki spokesperson confirming there is no new-generation model on the horizon. The compact SUV will, however, benefit from a number of cosmetic upgrades in the coming years.
