BMW Australia has announced pricing for its second-generation X4 coupe-style medium SUV, which will arrive in local showrooms in the third quarter priced from $76,900 plus on-road costs for the xDrive20i.
The four-variant range will incur a premium of up to $11,000 over the mechanically related X3, while prices also increase slightly over the outgoing version.
Like the X3, the new X4 will be offered with an M Performance-fettled version for the first time, with the M40i topping the line-up with its turbo-petrol six-cylinder engine and sporty styling.
The range opens with the xDrive20i, powered by a 135kW/290Nm 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine, the same donk in the rear-drive X3 sDrive20i. All X4 variants employ an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
Flying the diesel flag for the range is the xDrive20d, powered by a 140kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbo-diesel and asking $11,000 more than the equivalent X3, at $79,900.
Next up is the xDrive30i, using the same engine as the xDrive20i but with power boosted to 185kW/350Nm. At $83,900, it costs $8000 more than the X3 xDrive30i.
As mentioned, the range-topping M40i is $10,000 more than its X3 counterpart, at $109,900, and draws motivation from a 3.0-litre turbo-petrol inline six-cylinder donk outputting 265kW and 500Nm.
Styling matches the new-generation X3, with larger kidney grilles, rounder headlights with hexagonal lighting signatures, and redesigned tail-lights that help shape the coupe-like profile.
Debuted on the X2 small SUV, the X4 will be available with the M Sport X package as a no-cost option on all bar the M40i, which adds the M Aerodynamics trim package, Frozen Grey design elements, adaptive suspension, M sport brakes, high-gloss Shadow Line window surrounds and new alloy wheel designs. The M Sport package is otherwise standard.
Inside, the X4 gains a 10.25-inch colour touchscreen display with satellite navigation and real-time traffic information, a colour head-up display, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, an M leather steering wheel, ambient lighting and a ‘four plus one’ seating arrangement.
Standard equipment on the xDrive20i and Drive20d includes LED headlights, daytime running lights, foglights and tail-lights; anti-dazzle rearview and side mirrors, an interior lighting package, automatic headlights and wipers, 19-inch alloy wheels, sports front seats with side bolster adjustment, cloth/leather upholstery, front electric seat adjustment, automatic tailgate, three-zone climate control, ConnectedDrive services, DAB+ digital radio and a six-speaker audio system.
Standard safety kit includes seven airbags, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind spot monitor, speed limit info, a reversing camera, fully automated parking assistant and surround-view monitor.
Stepping up to xDrive30i adds full leather upholstery, keyless entry, a multi-function instrument display, M Sport brakes, adaptive LED headlights with high-beam assist, 20-inch alloys and the Driving Assistant Plus package, which includes adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality, front cross-traffic alert and active lane-keep assist.
The flagship M40i gains a number of sporty enhancements including specific adaptive M suspension, an M Sport differential, Cerium grey exterior design elements, 21-inch alloys, a panoramic glass sunroof, a 16-speaker harman/kardon sound system, ambient lighting, a leatherette instrument panel, wood interior trim, lumbar support for driver and front passenger, front seat heating and the ConnectedDrive Freedom package.
A number of option packages are also available for customers to ideally specify their vehicle.
With the impending new model, X4 sales are down 27.1 per cent in 2018, with 746 units moved to the end of July.
It is still outselling its main rival, the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe (471) but trails segment leaders like the GLC (3440), X3 (3280), Lexus NX (2423) and Audi Q5 (2385).
