VW announces reveal date for T-Cross small SUV

VOLKSWAGEN has announced the reveal date for its long-anticipated T-Cross small SUV, which will break cover in Amsterdam on Friday at 3am Australian Eastern Standard Time.

Set for an Australian debut in the second half of 2019, the long-awaited T-Cross has been teased for a final time, showing design sketches of the vehicle’s front end as well as snippets of the production version’s interior and exterior highlights.

The design sketch shows a front fascia that blends the clean, streamlined grille and bumper of the slightly larger T-Roc with headlights similar to the sixth-generation Polo light hatch.

An LED daytime running light (DRL) signature runs along the bottom and outer edge of the headlight cluster, along with what looks to be LED headlights. Foglights also feature.

A number of bright exterior colours will be offered on the T-Cross, including orange, blue and turquoise hues.

Two-tone colour-coded alloy wheels will also feature, adding to the youthful and funky spirit of the T-Cross.

The tail-lights will feature a unique design consisting of a gloss-black bezel interspersed with sectioned, LED tail-lights, giving the T-Cross a new, modern look.

At the rear, T-Cross lettering will be emblazoned across the tailgate, similar to the T-Roc.

Snippets of the interior show cloth seats, faux-carbon-fibre dashboard trim, a touchscreen infotainment system roughly 7.0-8.0 inches in length, and the brand’s Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster.

The T-Cross is built on Volkswagen Group’s MQB A0 front-drive platform shared by the Polo light hatch and Audi A1, and will likely share powertrains with the Polo.

Motivation is likely to come from a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol three-cylinder engine, producing either 70kW/175Nm teamed to a five-speed manual or 85kW/200Nm mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

A 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine is also a possibility, which would likely output 110kW/250Nm, also mated to the seven-speed DSG.

The T-Cross is part of a significant SUV offensive from the German car-maker, with its SUV line-up set to expand to 19 models within the next two years.

More information on the T-Cross will be available when it is officially unveiled on Friday.
