BMW has announced pricing for its range-topping X2 M35i, which arrives in local showrooms priced from $68,900 plus on-road costs – a $9000 premium over the previously top-spec xDrive20d variant.
The M35i is the first variant in the X2 range to be tweaked by the spanner-turners at BMW’s M division, and the first M-branded car to use a four-cylinder engine since the E30 M3, produced from 1985 to 1992.
Available for order now, it is also the second most affordable M Performance offering in BMW’s range, behind the 1 Series-based M140i hatchback.
The M35i employs a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-pot tuned to produce 225kW and 450Nm, driving all four wheels via an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission with launch control function.
Completing the sprint from standstill to 100km/h takes 4.9 seconds, while fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are yet to be confirmed.
As with other M-fettled variants, the M35i gains specially tuned M Sport suspension and steering, while an M Sport differential fitted to the front axle helps minimise torque steer and optimise front-end grip.
Chunky M Sport brakes with trademark blue callipers are visible through the M35i’s rims, namely double-spoke 20-inch light alloy wheels.
From the outside, the M35i is distinguishable from the rest of the X2 range by its M Aerodynamics package with trim components finished in signature Cerium Grey, gloss black details and specifically designed 100mm-wide twin exhaust pipes.
Inside, the M35i builds on the specification of the 20d and adds features such as M Sport seats with electric lumbar adjustment and front seat heating, M35i door sill finishers, perforated Dakota leather upholstery, anthracite roofliner, Comfort Access system, 360W 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, anti-dazzle mirrors and blue matte trim finishers.
This adds to the carryover spec including an 8.8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Navigation System Plus, a head-up display, front and rear parking sensors, LED headlights with cornering function, adaptive cruise control, dual-zone climate control, BMW Connected+ services and extended Bluetooth functionality.
The M35i also is offered with the exclusive Enhance package, which adds the choice of nine metallic paintwork hues, a panoramic glass sunroof and wireless phone charging for $2900.
Having launched in March this year, BMW has sold 988 examples of the X2, making up a 7.2 per cent share in the premium small SUV segment and trailing leaders such as the Mercedes-Benz GLA (3387), its X1 stablemate (2634) and the Audi Q3 (2062).
