Mercedes-AMG lobs GT 4-door Coupe pricing
MERCEDES-AMG has announced local pricing and specification for its all-new GT 4-door Coupe, with the brutal two-variant range touching down in Australia from June priced from $249,900 plus on-road costs.
The third model to be developed solely by AMG after the SLS and GT coupe/cabriolet, the GT 4-door range will open in entry-level 53 AMG guise, while the top-spec 63 S AMG variant sits a considerable $100,000 upstream at $349,900.
Despite its hefty price premium, Mercedes-Benz Australia/Pacific expects the 63 S to be the more popular variant – particularly at launch – due to Australian customers’ taste for top-spec AMG vehicles.
Benz does not expect the GT 4-door to be a big seller for the brand, but to attract a similar type of customer to an S-Class buyer, who enjoys customising their vehicle.
As seen in the CLS53 and E53, the GT 4-door Coupe 53 employs a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder hybrid powertrain which produces 320kW of power and 520Nm of torque, with an additional 16kW/250Nm momentarily available from the EQ Boost alternator/generator.
Meanwhile, the 63 S uses AMG’s ubiquitous 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 tuned to a potent 470kW/900Nm, the highest output yet achieved by the engine.
All that power is enough to hand the 63 S the title of fastest production four-door car to lap the Nordschleife loop of the Nurburgring circuit in Germany, with a blistering time of 7:25.41 minutes.
The 53 uses a nine-speed torque-converter automatic, while the GT63 S opts for a wet-clutch auto, also with nine cogs.
Both versions use the rear-biased 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system, which in normal conditions operates in rear-wheel drive, but can send up to 50 per cent of power to the front wheels as needed.
The 4-door 53 can complete the sprint from 0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds, while the GT63 S trims that time to a tidy 3.2s. Local fuel consumption and emissions figures are yet to be confirmed.
Both versions score an AMG Ride Control multi-chamber air suspension set-up and special AMG Parameter steering, while the 63 S becomes the third model after the GT C and GT R coupe to come as standard with rear-wheel steering, which is offered as an option on the 53.
Standard equipment for the 53 includes AMG Dynamic Plus driving modes, 20-inch alloy wheels, AMG performance brakes with yellow callipers, rear-axle limited-slip differential, glass sunroof, heated and cooled AMG performance seats trimmed in Nappa leather, leather/microfibre AMG performance steering wheel, head-up display, ambient lighting, open-pore wood trim, digital instrument cluster, wireless phone charging and the Mercedes Comand multimedia interface with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and DAB+ digital radio.
As for safety kit, the 53 includes nine airbags, blind-spot assist, autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, active lane-change assist, active steering assist, driver fatigue warning, tyre pressure monitor and the Pre-Safe suite of accident anticipation systems.
The 63 S builds on the specification of the 53 and adds 21-inch matte-black alloy wheels, active dynamic engine mounts, a carbon-fibre fixed roof, rear dark-tinted privacy glass, power-closing doors, microfibre steering wheel, carbon-fibre trim, Nappa leather/microfibre upholstery and heated outer rear seats.
A number of option packs will be available including the Luxury Rear package, which deletes the middle rear seat and adds a ‘business’ centre console with storage compartment, roller blind and trim element, a touchscreen, two high-class individual rear seats, two USB ports, temperature-controlled cupholders and rear wireless charging.
63 S buyers will also be able to option the Edition 1 package, which bundles the AMG Aerodynamics Package, 21-inch AMG cross-spoke forged wheels in matte black with a high-sheen finish, AMG sports stripes, climate-controlled front seats, exclusive grey/black Nappa leather with yellow seatbelts, two individual rear seats and AMG matte carbon-fibre trim.
First deliveries are expected to start around June.
