Hyundai updates Elantra range-toppers
HYUNDAI Motor Company Australia (HMCA) has released local details for its facelifted Elantra Sport and Sport Premium small sedans, which are priced at $28,990 and $31,490 plus on-road costs respectively.
Swapping the standard six-speed manual transmission for a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic commands a $2500 in both cases, with the latter unavailable in the Elantra’s entry-level Go and Active grades.
The Sport and Sport Premium variants are powered by a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine – the same engine used in the Hyundai i30 N-Line and Kia Cerato GT – tuned to deliver 150kW and 265Nm.
Meanwhile, the rest of the range uses a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engine producing 112kW and 192Nm.
The Sport benefits from a number of features absent from the Go and Active, including LED headlights, daytime running lights and tail-lights; a sports bodykit, 18-inch alloy wheels, front sports seats, dual-zone climate control, leather-appointed upholstery and a sliding centre console armrest.
Other interior kit includes alloy sports pedals, stainless-steel scuff plates, a sports steering wheel, carbon-fibre-effect trim pieces, a black roofliner and keyless entry and start.
Models equipped with the dual-clutch transmission gain paddle-shifters on the sports steering wheel and selectable driving modes.
Safety kit from Hyundai’s Smart Sense suite includes autonomous emergency braking (AEB), blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision avoidance, high-beam assist, but the Sport misses out on active cruise control.
Jumping up to the Sport Premium adds more interior gear over and above the Sport, including a 10-way adjustable power driver’s seat, an extra USB charge port, wireless smartphone charging, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, front parking sensors and a power sunroof.
For an extra $495, Hyundai offers a metallic/mica paint option, while $295 nets buyers a unique red interior package.
HMCA sold 3843 Elantras in 2018, for a 31.5 per cent decline compared to the year before, while its i30 hatchback stablemate was more successful, with 21,188 registrations for a 2.1 per cent dip year-to-year.
