Citroen teases pure-EV mobility concept

CITROEN has teased an all-electric mobility concept in a video posted to its social media, suggesting a futuristic pod-like vehicle that will be revealed later this month.

The French manufacturer claims in the video that the new concept will “make electric available to all”, suggesting an affordable and mass-market vehicle is on the way.

Little is given away from the teaser video, showing only a darkened front-on silhouette of the as-yet-unnamed EV that includes simple, wide-set headlights, a flat, wide grille that stretches across the bonnet and illuminated double-chevron Citroen badge.

The teaser video also seems to show the mystery vehicle with a high roof, suggesting a people-mover or mobility-pod-style vehicle may be on the cards.

Citroen says the new vehicle is set for a reveal on February 27, while the Geneva motor show in March could possibly host its public debut.

While the teaser may suggest a boxy MPV or mobility pod, there is also the possibility of the EV being one of Citroen’s more mass-market models, such as the new-generation C4 hatch.

Citroen has suggested in the past that a full-electric version of the C4 will be unveiled by the brand following the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the C5 Aircross medium SUV, and that the zero-emissions small hatch would be built on the brand’s e-CMP platform shared by Peugeot.

There is also the chance that the new model could be related to Peugeot’s e-208 light hatch, which features a 50kWh battery, 340km of range and an output of 100kW.

Citroen has some limited experience with EVs, including the funky E-Mehari that was offered in limited production last decade, as well as a rebadged version of the Mitusbishi i-MiEV caleld the C-Zero – neither made it into Australian dealerships.

The all-electric 19?19 concept revealed last year gave a hint as to the brand’s EV capabilities with a 100kWh battery, 800km of driving range and a powerful 340kW/800Nm all-wheel-drive powertrain.

It also has shown off its hybrid potential with the C5 Aircross from November and the sedan/wagon Cxperience concept revealed in 2016.

Along with the e-208, sister company Peugeot has also dipped its toe in the water of EV tech through exciting vehicles like the all-electric, retro-futuristic e-Legend concept, PHEV versions of the 508 sedan and 3008 SUV, and an upcoming performance hybrid sportscar set for a reveal this year.

More details on the Citroen concept will be revealed at the unveiling on February 27.
