TOYOTA Australia has announced it has secured additional stock of its new-generation A5 Supra, adding to the initial batch that arrived in September, and has resulted in 345 sales to the end of January.
The Japanese car-maker has not divulged exactly how many new Supras are heading Down Under, only saying “a limited number of cars” have been made available in dealerships.
Along with the additional stock, Toyota has also announced a power boost is on the way for the Supra, with the performance wick set to be dialled up from 250kW in current guise to 285kW, with torque remaining steady at 500Nm.
Due towards the end of 2020, the bump in power now matches that of the BMW M340i and X3 M40i, which share the Supra’s B58 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine.
The bump in power can be expected to result in a quicker 0-100km/h sprint time, which currently stands at 4.3 seconds for both the GT and GTS grades – its sister car, the BMW Z4, received the same power boost late last year and now does the 0-100km/h dash in 4.1-seconds.
Handling is also set to receive some minor tweaks, with Toyota set to introduce refinements including new under-bonnet chassis braces that provide additional rigidity.
According to Toyota, pricing for the revised Supra range is yet to be released, but the bump in power is expected to be matched by a bump in price, up from the current $84,900 plus on-roads for the GT and $94,900 for the GTS.
Toyota also says availability for the updated, more powerful Supra is expected to be tighter than the current version.
The decision to tweak the Supra is in line with chief product specialist Tetsuya Tada’s comment at launch that the brand would update the Supra every year, with the possibility of introducing new variants at some point.
Toyota Australia vice president sales and marketing Sean Hanley said the additional Supra stock would help fans get their hands on the vehicle.
“The current car already has incredible power and torque with 250kW and 500Nm from its highly responsive engine - a great vehicle that has won several motoring awards,” he said.
“Being able to import an additional allocation of cars means enthusiasts can now achieve their GR Supra dream sooner than expected - perhaps even as a Valentine's Day present to themselves!”
Further details on specification and updated pricing will be revealed closer to the updated Supra’s arrival in Australia towards the end of the year.
