TOYOTA is going all out in its celebration of the LandCruiser’s 70th anniversary, having not only debuted a special edition 70 Series but also confirming its GR department will start reproducing parts for the original 40 Series as part of its Heritage Parts Project.
Specifically focusing on parts that have been discontinued, the remanufactured components will be sold as genuine items through a special collaboration with suppliers in a bid to preserve not only the vehicles themselves, but the “memories” made in and associated with them.
“The LandCruiser has long promised ‘to take people anywhere and everywhere and come back alive and safe’,” Toyota said in a statement.
“Even models whose production has been discontinued for several decades continue to be cherished by large numbers of customers all over the world, and continue to actively support lives, livelihoods, and more fulfilling lifestyles.
“However, recent years have seen a shortage of spare parts, with LandCruiser owners expressing fears they will no longer be able to drive their vehicles.”
According to Toyota executives, GR will be focusing on parts with the greatest demand, identified through surveys it has already done with dealers and fan club representatives around the world.
Engines, drivelines and exhaust systems will be among the parts offered when the program goes live at the beginning of 2022.
Discussions about similar programs for later series LandCruisers are already underway while a new questionnaire will be going live on the Toyota Japan website for customers to submit their reproduction requests, the feedback of which will be used in the selection of parts to reproduce next.
This is not the first heritage program undertaken by GR; last year it launched a similar project for both the A70 and A80 Supras, as well as the iconic and rare 2000GT.
Parts for the Supras were expected to hit the shelves last month, including clutch master cylinders, clutch release bearings, brake and heater hoses, and air-conditioner control panel knobs for the A70 and, for the A80, oxygen sensors.
Other parts like badges, body panels and trim are expected to become available this month.
As for the 2000GT, its list of available parts includes gears, synchro hub and sleeves, gaskets and oil seal kits, bearing kits, snap ring kits, thrust washers, shift forks, final gear kits and ring gear set bolts.
