VOLKSWAGEN has reduced the recommended list price of its Tiguan R by $1000 to $68,990 plus on-road costs.
Like the Golf R before it – which was reduced by the same amount earlier this month – the high-performance Tiguan R SUV has fallen victim to the effects of the ongoing microprocessor shortage, and like the Golf R will be offered with the high-end Harmon Kardon audio package as an optional extra.
VW says that while the Tiguan R has yet to be affected by the temporary unavailability of the premium sound system, it is aware that such a situation is a possibility and has adjusted the vehicle’s list price as a precaution.
"The majority of the more than 7000 expressions of interest and the 1000 paid deposits for our new R range have so far been for the Tiguan R," Brand Director of Volkswagen Passenger Vehicles Michal Szaniecki said.
"To keep the lines running, Harmon Kardon becomes optional on the Tiguan R as it is with the Golf. Harman Kardon Tiguan Rs are still being built, so too will be versions with the standard eight-speaker audio system familiar from the rest of the Tiguan range."
The adjustment effectively means the Harmon Kardon audio system become a $1000 option, joining the panoramic sunroof ($2000) as the only extras available on the highly specified model.
Along with 4MOTION all-wheel drive – with R Performance torque vectoring – the new Volkswagen Tiguan R is equipped with 21-inch Estoril alloy wheels, performance brake calipers finished in blue paint, adaptive chassis control, and IQ.LIGHT matrix LED headlights.
Inside, the extensive feature list includes a 9.2-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, satellite navigation and digital radio, 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro (digital instrument panel), R Nappa leather appointed upholstery with R logo in blue, electric front seat with memory, LED ambient lighting, tri-zone climate control, keyless entry and start, adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go functionality, head-up display, 360-degree camera, and semi-autonomous parking.
Mr Szaniecki the broader Tiguan range will not be impacted by the semi-conductor constraints.
"Because our customers typically select the top end variants, semi-conductor constraints have especially affected the Tiguan 162TSI R-line," he said.
"Fortunately, the refreshed Tiguan Allspace arrives in May (and), in addition to a third row of seating or the extra storage space this model provides, we've ensured the Allspace has extra specification to more than ameliorate the sight price premium over the five-seat Tiguans."
Golf R hatch and Tiguan R SUV will be launched in Australia this April, with Golf R wagon variants to follow in “May or June”, Volkswagen says.
