GENESIS revealed a new concept model at the New York Show this week. Named the X Speedium Coupe, it provides a look ahead to the Korean brand’s “next wave of EVs”.
The manufacturer says the model highlights its future ideals as a true electric-vehicle brand and draws inspiration from the passion for motorsports felt by Genesis engineers.
Born from a freestyle design exercise, the X Speedium Coupe was created under the watchful eye of 2022 World Car Person of the Year and Genesis chief creative officer, Luc Donckerwolke.
Mr Donckerwolke says the model incorporates Genesis’ “athletic elegance” in an even more progressive way and encapsulates the belief that the “emotional value of driving” will remain strong in the era of electrification.
The Genesis X Speedium Coupe stands out for its restrained elegance, clean lines, and subtle curves. It is recognised by the brand’s Two Lines lighting signature, which, at the front, features a full-width element that encompasses the shape of the Genesis Crest.
The new EV face will come to symbolise the brand’s transformation towards becoming an all-electric brand with a six-model line-up by the end of the decade, Mr Donckerwolke said.
From an overhead perspective, the hourglass silhouette is intended to highlight the Coupe’s “passion and character”, while its curvaceous arches aim to accentuate the vehicle’s “muscular presence”.
Viewed in profile, the X Speedium Coupe’s parabolic line, which extends from the front to the rear of the car, emulates the tension line of classic models, while a deliberate “anti-wedge” motif creates a look reminiscent of early streamliners.
At the rear, the elliptical tail matches convex and concave surfaces, which are broken by V-shaped brake lights in what Genesis says is a “striking contrast”.
The concept model’s metallic emerald exterior finish is referred to as “Inje Green.” As expected of a car that was inspired by a Korean racetrack, the colour encompasses the mountainous landscape where the track is located, completing the image of a classic car that embodies dynamism, speed, and timeless elegance, Mr Donckerwolke says.
“This car is an open-door moment in Genesis’ journey towards our future EV design. This isn’t a show car, it’s a look into our design processes as we explore ideas for the next wave of EVs, one that incorporates Genesis’ DNA,” he said.
“We are giving each design element space to breathe. It’s not about making the design elements compete with each other, but about orchestrating the elements so that they complement and respect one another.”
