Next-gen Hyundai Kona unveiled

HYUNDAI has given us a first look at its production-ready next-generation Kona, the small-segment SUV to be offered in four variants including all-electric (BEV), hybrid electric (HEV), internal combustion (ICE) and sporty N Line.

 

Sharing common architecture, but with model-specific styling, the four-variant Kona range is said to convey a “more dynamic road presence” while offering improved “living space” for its occupants.

 

Despite its larger proportions, the model is said to retain its urban-centric packaging. The new Kona measures in at 4335mm in length (+150mm) while growing 25mm in width and 60mm in wheelbase.

 

Hyundai says that unlike many models that shoehorn BEV driveline into platforms originally designed for ICE, the new Kona started with a BEV design and worked backward to adapt the platform for HEV and ICE configurations.

 

The model is distinguished by a clean, distinctive frontal treatment with smoother lines for improved aerodynamic performance, highlighted by a stretched “Seamless Horizon Lamp” across the front end like that of the Staria people mover.

 

Hyundai says that despite the futuristic look, the Kona remains a practical SUV for which the bold wheelarch cladding and incorporated head- and tail-lights reinforce its robust underpinnings.

 

Defined by model-specific parametric surfaces, the Kona is distinguished by a sharp diagonal crease on each side that connects a satin chrome moulding from the beltline through to the spoiler, creating a contour line that wraps around the entire vehicle.

 

The rear end features another Seamless Horizon Lamp as well as a high-mounted stop light that is integrated within the satin chrome moulding of the spoiler.

 

Differentiating the four variants are pixel graphic details on the intake grille and rear bumper, a pixel-inspired 19-inch alloy wheel design, black embracing line and optional black side mirrors and roof on the BEV variant, while HEV and ICE models share a bold and rugged bumper and skid plate design, and black wheelarch cladding.

 

N Line models are separated further by optional black side mirrors and roof, a wing-type spoiler, more aggressive front and rear designs with wing-shaped bumpers to emphasise a lower stance, distinctive 19-inch alloy wheels, twin mufflers and silver side skirts.

 

Inside, differences between the variants are said to accommodate “diverse lifestyles”.

 

Hyundai says the EV-derived universal architecture accommodates a sporty layout with floating horizontal C-Pad to emphasise Kona’s slim and wide interior, providing a versatile space for driver and passengers.

 

Dual 12.3-inch displays dominate the dashboard alongside a column-type shift-by-wire gear selector, floating central console, and hi-tech LED ambient lighting system.

 

Further back, the second row’s “Curve-less Bench Seat” layout reinforces what Hyundai calls a “21st century urban design” with “maximum usability, comfort and convenience”.

 

“Upscaled with Kona's unique character, the all-new Kona confidently expresses its bold and dynamic presence,” said Hyundai Design Centre executive vice president SangYup Lee.

 

“Kona has evolved in every respect to embrace an even wider range of diversity, to become a true lifestyle supporter."
