MAZDA has taken the wraps off an all-new electrified vehicle, the Mazda EZ-6, and the Mazda Arata design concept at this week’s Beijing Auto Show.
Mazda says the EZ-6 is the first in a series of new electrified vehicles developed in China, where it will be launched before the end of this year.
In addition, the concept model Arata is scheduled to become a mass production model by the end of 2025, the vehicle again flagged for sale only in the Chinese market.
Combining the latest Kodo design styling cues and Jimba Ittai driving dynamics, the Mazda EZ-6 is to be offered in two variants – one a battery electric model and the other a plug-in hybrid.
The five-seat sedan promises 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution, strut front and multi-link rear suspension and an electrically activated rear spoiler that “improves high-speed stability”. The show model rides on 19-inch alloy wheels.
Other smart features are said to include advanced accident mitigation technology, intelligent parking assistants – including voice controlled and remote parking – and innovative in-cabin technologies that may be controlled by voice, touch, or gesture.
The rear-wheel drive EZ-6 measures 4921mm in length, 1890mm in width and 1485mm in height. By way of comparison, that sees the model come very close to the existing Mazda6 sedan, which measures 4865mm, 1840mm, and 1450mm respectively.
While Mazda has yet to detail powertrain specifications or other details, it claims the battery electric version of the EZ-6 will offer a driving range of approximately 600km with the PHEV variant to achieve over 1000km on a single tank of fuel.
Moving to the Mazda Arata design concept we find a model that claims to be based on the philosophy of “Uplifting the Human Spirit”. As a crossover SUV, the future production model carries a sleek, elegant impression Mazda says is designed to appeal to the advanced, sophisticated taste of Chinese consumers.
Spruiked as soulful, futuristic, and modern, the Arata “boasts thick doors and a three-dimensional configuration that provides traction to the four tyres, creating a powerful, dynamic shape that is typical of Kodo design”.
The cross-wing tail-lights with their overlapping wings resemble those of the Mazda logo, while at the front, air tunnels in the bonnet and on both sides of the bumper are said to contribute to improved environmental performance…
“We are delighted to introduce the all-new new-energy vehicle (NEV) developed in alliance with Mazda and Changan Automobile,” said Mazda president and CEO Masahiro Moro.
“The Mazda EZ-6 is the latest electrified vehicle that combines Mazda's strengths with Changan Automobile’s electrified technology.
“Going forward, Mazda will continue to work with Changan Automobile to turn Mazda’s China business around by introducing its unique products that meet the needs of Chinese customers who prefer advanced vehicles.”
GoAuto understands there are no plans to offer either model outside of the Chinese market.
