540d xDrive to join BMW 5 Series range

BMW will add the high powered 540d xDrive diesel-powered sedan to its 5 Series range in the fourth quarter of this year priced from $134,900 plus on-road costs – or $3500 more than the 530d it replaces.

Slotting between 520i (petrol) and i5 (battery electric) variants, the 540d will replace the 530d in BMW Australia’s line-up and is expected to become the go-to choice for police forces currently employing the 5 Series diesel for highway patrol duties.

The BMW 540d xDrive features a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder diesel engine developing 223kW of power and 670Nm of torque, an improvement of 28kW and 50Nm over the 530d.

The driveline is aided by a 48-volt mild hybrid system which contributes 13kW and 200Nm to the deal and can recover charge via regenerative braking. All-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission complete the package.

BMW quotes a 0-100km/h acceleration time of just 5.2 seconds for the 540d xDrive sedan, or half-a-second faster than the model it replaces.

Expectedly, standard features for the 5 Series variant are extensive with a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, 20-inch alloy wheels, adaptive LED headlights, adaptive suspension, carbon-fibre trim garnishing, dual-zone climate control, heated sport seats, leather upholstery, LED ambient cabin lighting, keyless entry and ignition, M Sport leather steering wheel, M Sport package with M Sport brakes, panoramic glass roof, tyre pressure monitor and repair kit ‘spare’.

On the infotainment side we find BMW ConnectedDrive services available via a 14.5-inch infotainment screen, digital radio reception, wireless device charging pad, and 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system.
