FIAT Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) likes to call the regular Fiat 500 a separate model from the Abarth 595 rather than the hot hatchback version of the Italian micro car.

The exception to this rule is, however, when talk turns to taking buyers from the 500 and stepping them up to the 595, as this entry Abarth priced from $27,500 plus on-road costs is designed to do.

A half-decade ago the 500 Sport with a 1.4-litre naturally aspirated engine cost $24,990 and now this 1.4-litre turbocharged Abarth version, softened slightly but still with full macho styling gear, costs only $2500 more. The new 595 is also $6500 cheaper than the previous entry to the Abarth range, the $34,000 595 Turismo that continues in the range as a more powerful and hardcore model grade.

The 595 looks like solid value when compared with other Fiat hatchbacks, but can the Abarth 595 play beyond its own sandpit against price-rivals such as the Ford Fiesta ST and Volkswagen Polo GTI?
