THE 156 uses four-wheel discs, ventilated at the front, and has as standard an anti-lock braking system with electronic brake force distribution (EBD). EBD apportions brake pressure according to load and road conditions. The 156 ABS system is a Bosch 5.3 unit, employing four sensors and four channels, which means each wheel is monitored and braked independently. Alfa Romeo has adopted active sensors for the 156 brake system, which not only measure wheel speed, but also process the signal themselves instead of transmitting it to the control unit. Quickened response time is one of a number of plusses.
