Add $6000 for Spider

BY MARTON PETTENDY | 24th Oct 2006

ALFA Romeo has revealed full pricing and specifications for its redesigned Spider convertible ahead of its release at this week’s Sydney motor show, where it will make its Australian public debut.

Priced from $76,950 for the entry-level 136kW 2.2-litre JTS four-cylinder manual variant – representing a $7000 premium over the Brera JTS coupe upon which it’s based – the Spider range extends to the JTS V6, which is powered by a 191kW 3.2-litre V6.

At $100,950, the JTS V6 is priced $6000 upstream of the Brera V6 coupe, with which it also shares Alfa’s Q4 permanent all-wheel drive system that directs 57 per cent of torque to the rear wheels in normal conditions. Like the Spider JTS, it’s available exclusively as a manual.

Echoing the Brera’s equipment levels, metallic paint is a $1750 option on both Spider variants and, while electric seats are a $3250 option in the JTS, they’re standard in the V6.

Like Brera, Spider is based on the new 159 sedan platform – complete with double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension systems - but features a 175mm-shorter wheelbase.

Brakes are as per Brera too, meaning 205mm ventilated front and 278mm solid rear brake rotors for the JTS, while the V6 features 330mm ventilated front discs with four-piston Brembo monobloc aluminium calipers and 292mm ventilated rear discs.

Alfa claims the Spider offers the most direct steering in its class, with a speed-sensitive power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering rack requiring only 2.25 turns lock-to-lock and returning a tight 10.7-metre turning circle.

Along with seven airbags and seatbelt pretensioners, the two-seater roadster’s standard equipment list runs to switchable VDC stability control and ASR traction control, MSR torque modulation during down-changes, a hill-holder function, ABS and EBD.

Spider’s unique features include a power-operated folding fabric roof, chromed rollover bars, a wind break and rear storage compartments, while standard equipment also includes dual-zone climate-control, cruise control, trip computer, multi-function display, foglights, 18-inch spoked alloy wheels and a six-speaker CD sound system.

The Spider 3.2 JTS Q4 adds premium Pieno sports leather trim, electric/heated seats, Xenon headlights with washers, a Bose sound system, Bluetooth phone connection and unique-design alloy wheels.

A Q-Tronic six-speed automatic transmission will become available for the Spider in early 2007.

2007 Alfa Romeo Spider pricing:
Spider 2.2 JTS $76,950
Spider 3.2 JTS Q4 $100,950
Spider 3.2 JTS Q4 (a) $TBA
