The A3 was launched in Europe in 1996 and here in 1997. Its rounded shape broke the mould of square-ish sedans and wagons which personified Audi up until then.

Of course, the fabulous TT has since shattered the mould altogether. The five-door A3 arrived here in 1999. There was no change to dimensions to facilitate the added flexibility, Audi simply shortening the front doors by 181mm.
