THE 2.0 A4 is available with either a five-speed manual or Multitronic (continuously variable) automatic transmission. Only available on front-drive models for now, Multitronic is being touted as the only one of its kind in the world and features an electronic "dynamic control program" to help work out optimum gearshift strategies. Rather than use a conventional hydraulic torque converter, Multitronic uses a multi-plate chain designed to manage engine torque up to 310Nm. Electronics regulate engine output and the degree of clutch slip/grip according to driver input via the accelerator pedal. The system also features sequential manual gear selection which allows the driver to choose between six programmed gear ratios.
