QUITE unexpectedly, Audi has rolled out Australia’s first ever diesel-powered sports car in the shape of the TT TDI quattro, as part of a broadened range that also includes a base 1.8-litre petrol model. Combining high levels of torque, economy and grip, as well as lower CO2 emissions, to a 2+2-seater coupe might just end up being another Audi masterstroke, since even diesel doubters will have to admit that the TT TDI quattro’s refinement and performance levels are not adversely compromised. Whether rival makers follow suit soon remains to be seen, but Audi has an opportunity to make hay while soaking up some green kudos in a segment that few believed possible to do so.
