BENTLEY’S first SUV, the Bentayga, has also become the first vehicle in the legendary British brand’s 98 years to sport a diesel engine.

Of course, being a Bentley, it is no ordinary diesel, rather one of the most powerful of its breed in passenger cars.

Shared with sister brand Audi’s SQ7, the 4.0-litre V8 oil-burner turns out 320kW of power and 900Nm of torque, which is sufficient to make the Bentayga Diesel the fastest SUV on the planet (263km/h, since you asked).

Which sounds terrific for bitumen highways. But this is a large SUV with pretensions for off-road travel, too. So, is it a big city softie or the real thing?
