MERCEDES-BENZ 190E 1.8/180E 4D SEDAN (1990-1994)
THE entry level model to the three-pointed star offers probably the world's best build quality with a similar list of equipment and more interior space than the 318i. The on-road performance is smooth and refined although in 1.8-litre guise the 82kW performance is leisurely.

VOLKSWAGEN GOLF VR6 5D HATCHBACK (1994-1998)
THE Golf's strong points are more equipment than the BMW and a smooth, powerful 2.8-litre V6 with 128kW which makes it the performance leader of this group. The ride and handling do not match the BMW with more understeer and less traction from the front-wheel drive.

HONDA ACCORD 4D SEDAN (1993-1997)
THE Accord is a strong competitor with more interior space than the BMW, the best equipment list of this group and very high build quality. The VTi also has a refined 2.2-litre V-TEC engine producing 107kW so performance is not far behind the Golf.

SAAB 900 5D HATCHBACK (1994-1998)
THE 900 is a much more rounded and streamlined design than its predecessors but is still instantly recognisable as a Saab. It is comfortable and almost as well equipped as the Accord. There is 110kW from the 2.3-litre, 16-valve engine, which makes the Saab a lively performer.
