Australian debut of BMW 620d GT confirmed

BMW has revealed a new entry point to its 6 Series Gran Turismo range with the diesel-powered 620d that will hit Australian showrooms in September.

Speaking to GoAuto, BMW Australia product communications manager Adam Davis confirmed the local division of the Bavarian brand would sell the new entry-level four-door 6 Series, but “pricing and spec (will be revealed) a bit closer to the launch date”.

The 6 Series Gran Turismo range currently kicks off at $123,500 before on-road costs for the 190kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbo-petrol rear-drive 630i, while the all-paw 250kW/450Nm 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder 640i costs $148,900.

Therefore, it is expected the 620d will be the most-affordable 6 Series GT yet, carrying a pricetag closer to $100,000 and equipped with a 140kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four cylinder.

Peak power is available from 4000rpm, while maximum torque comes in between 1750-2500rpm, which is sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission for a zero to 100km/h sprint time of 7.9 seconds.

The new base 6 Series will sip around 4.9 litres of diesel per 100km and emit about 128 grams of CO2 per kilometre and, according to BMW, the engine “provides for a particularly efficient form of driving pleasure … which was designed for long-distance ride comfort and versatile functionality”.

Expect to see equipment such as a 10.25-inch iDrive6 infotainment touchscreen, 12.3-inch digital instrumentation, a head-up display and active safety aids as standard in the 620d, while the adaptive two-axle air suspension with dynamic damper control system will be an option.

BMW Australia has sold just 38 examples of its 6 Series GT in the first four months of 2018 and is currently placed fourth in the over $100,000 upper large sedan segment behind the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (94), BMW 7 Series (62) and Porsche Panamera (56).
