BMW introduced its first diesel vehicle to Australia only in 2003, but now a third of its cars have a diesel engine under the bonnet. One car that had not received a diesel was the high-end luxury 7 Series limo, even though BMW had offered one in Europe since 1996. Now BMW has followed the lead of Mercedes-Benz and Audi, which sell diesel versions of the S-class and A8, and introduced the 730d. With a 3.0-litre turbo diesel six, the 730d uses only 7.2 litres per 100km and still manages a respectable 0-100km/h time of 7.2 seconds. While the green credentials are likely to make this a popular proposition, the fact that it is the cheapest 7 Series in the range ($4200 cheaper than the 740i) is likely to attract genuine interest.
