BMW X1 gets M-look

BY MARTON PETTENDY | 7th Feb 2011

FRESH from revealing an M Sport accessory kit for the new X3 in Europe and releasing a similar titivation treatment for the new 5 Series sedan locally last August, BMW has now made available an M Sport cosmetic package for its smallest SUV, the X1.

Like the long-running M Sport kit for the bigger X5, the X1’s new sports accessory option pack features a range of styling upgrades from BMW’s M division, headlined by M Sport exterior additions such as an M Aerodynamic package, 17-inch double-spoke M light-alloy wheels, high-gloss Shadow Line exterior trim and roof rails, and M-badged door sill finishers.

Available across the five-variant X1 range, which does not include a specific M model with extra performance like the X5 xDrive M and X6 xDrive M, the M kit also features mechanical upgrades including firmer M Sport suspension (which can be deleted) and Performance Control for all-wheel drive xDrive models, which optimises rear-wheel torque distribution to deliver “particularly dynamic cornering and increased agility”.

Inside, the X1 M Sport kit features sports seats with grey alcantara anthracite trim, BMW Individual anthracite headlining, cross-brushed aluminium trim and an M leather steering wheel.

In addition to the X1 M Sport kit, which costs $4500 for the xDrive25i, $3500 for the flagship xDrive 23d and $4200 for all other X1 variants, BMW Australia has also announced the availability of Nevada leather trim, 18-inch light-alloy wheels and Chrome Line exterior trim for the X1.

As we reported two weeks ago, BMW’s new turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine – which will eventually replace the company’s iconic 3.0-litre naturally aspirated straight six – will debut in the new range-topping X1 xDrive28i.

As yet no arrival time has been confirmed for the latter in Australia, where the X1 first arrived in dealers last April.

BMW X1 M Sport package Australian pricing:
X1 sDrive18i $4,200
X1 sDrive20d $4,200
X1 xDrive20d $4,200
X1 xDrive25i $4,500
X1 xDrive23d $3,500
