SLIGHTLY smaller than the X5, but only slightly less expensive, the BMW X3 aims at filling a tight gap between the 3 Series Touring wagon and the big, market-dominating SUV. But is there a credibility gap here too? Some interesting contradictions are evident in the X3 – it has more load space than the X5, for example – but the bottom line is whether or not it will scoop up potential buyers unwilling to stretch to the bigger vehicle. It’s a very capable SUV, both on and off-road, but the X3 seems to fit with slight discomfort into the BMW model line-up. A significantly reduced pricetag might have helped.
