BMW swaps top-spec X4

The diesel-powered flagship takes the place of the xDrive30d which has been discontinued, and is priced from $89,900 plus on-road costs, representing a $5700 premium over the variant it replaces.
Power comes from a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that delivers 230kW and 630Nm, and increase of 40kW/70Nm over the 30d's 190kW/560Nm output.
The X4 drives all four wheels via an eight-speed sport automatic transmission.
The 35d can complete the 0-100km/h dash in 5.2 seconds, which is 0.6s quicker than the 30d, while fuel consumption has increased by just 0.1 litre per 100 kilometres on the combined cycle to 6.0L/100km.
Audi's performance-focussed diesel SUV, the SQ5, is priced from $91,700 and its 230kW/650Nm 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 helps push the high-riding wagon from 0-100km/h in 5.1s.
Standard fare over and above the 30d includes 20-inch M light alloy wheels, DAB+ digital radio, a Harman Kardon surround sound system and internet access.
It also gains the Comfort Access system which includes keyless entry and an automatic tail-gate, while the ConnectedDrive Freedom system consists of ConnectedDrive Services, Remote Services, Real Time Traffic Information and Concierge Services.
It already features Dynamic Damper Control, bi-Xenon headlights, leather upholstery, M leather steering wheel with gearshift paddles, an M aerodynamics package, a reversing camera including Surround View with 360-degree visibility, and the Professional navigation system.
BMW Group Australia head of product and market planning Shawn Ticehurst said the X4 has proven popular Down Under since its launch in July last year.
“With substantial increases in performance and specification, the BMW X4 xDrive35d is a welcome addition to the brand’s model line-up,” he said.
“Since its launch last year, the X4 has enjoyed great success, confirming the strength of our X range of sports activity vehicles, which was recently bolstered by the arrival of the new BMW X1.”The X4 is based on the X3 mid-size SUV, and acts as a smaller sibling for the swoopy X6 which comes of the X5's platform.
Since its launch last year, the X4 has been a solid seller for BMW, shifting 891 units to the end of October this year, compared with 2484 X3s in the same period.
The base X4 xDrive20i is priced from $69,510, the equivalently specified diesel costs $73,700 and the top-spec petrol version – the xDrive35i is priced from $87,510.
