First look: Chrysler goes Imperial again

BY MARTON PETTENDY | 11th Jan 2006

NOT content with wowing crowds with its Challenger coupe from sister brand Dodge, Chrysler used this week's Detroit motor show opening to reveal a brand-new flagship sedan bearing the Imperial name that was once sold as a stand-alone marque.

To be based on a stretched version of the LY-codenamed platform that will underpin the next-generation 300C sedan from 2008 (the current 300C and Charger sedan are based on existing LX architecture), the Imperial will be Chrysler’s new luxury flagship to rival premium Cadillacs in the US.

Like 300C and the LY-based Challenger coupe concept, the rear-drive Imperial is likely to be HEMI V8-powered. Riding on a 3125mm wheelbase, Imperial is about 430mm longer than the 300C and 150mm higher.

Expect the next-generation of Chrysler and Dodge passenger car models - including the 300C, Imperial, Charger and Challenger - to begin appearing in the US from later next year.
