DODGE proves you don’t need to spend a lot to stand out in a crowd with its new Nitro SUV. The not-so-quiet American has arrived in Australia with a sharp starting price of $36,990. Built off the same platform to be used by the next-generation Jeep Cherokee, the Nitro possesses an old-school part-time four-wheel-drive system that is not suitable for tarmac use. Powered by a 3.7-litre V6 petrol or 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, the Nitro takes on mid-sized SUV rivals from the Holden Captiva to the Ford Territory. Unlike those car-based competitors, the Nitro comes from a 4WD background, which explains its solid rear axle design instead of an independent rear suspension system. A full suite of safety gear is standard for the big Dodge, including electronic stability control and six airbags. Chrysler Group Australia has sweetened the deal by announcing two years free insurance for Nitro buyers, an offer that is now also available on the Caliber and all other Dodge models moving forward.
