Mitsubishi announces 'potential' Fiat pick-up deal

MITSUBISHI has signed an agreement with Fiat, which could pave the way to the development and manufacture of a “mid-sized pick-up” based on the Japanese company’s forthcoming Triton ute.

In a short statement released today, Mitsubishi confirmed previous reports that the two automotive giants were considering a joint-venture that would create a new offering in the light-commercial segment.

The release does not include any details, but it is likely the vehicle is the small ute announced in Fiat Chrysler's extensive five-year plan earlier this year, destined for the Latin American market.

In a separate agreement already announced, Mitsubishi will also supply a Chrysler-badged version of the Thai-built Attrage sedan (sold as the Mirage sedan in Australia), to be sold in Mexico.

Fiat Chrysler Group Australia has previously told GoAuto that if a Fiat branded ute were to go into production it would be limited to the intended Brazilian market and Australian introduction is unlikely.

However, the Italian brand continues to push its local light-commercial vehicle range and a ute offering alongside the Ducato and Scudo vans would make sense.

Mitsubishi has been equally coy with details of the eagerly awaited Triton, but a replacement for the seven-year old model is expected in 2015, and is reported to have a sharpened look with more safety features.

That timing would allow a Fiat collaboration in accordance with the previously announced five year plan, but neither car-maker has been more specific with a schedule.
